I Did “Everything Right”… And Still Got It Wrong
For nearly three decades, I did what the industry told me to do.
I built a big team.
I hired staff.
I removed myself from production.
On paper, it looked like success.
In reality, I was exhausted, disconnected, and farther away from the life I wanted than ever before.
I didn’t build freedom.
I built a prison — one that required more of my time, energy, and presence every year.
That moment forced a hard question:
What if real estate could support your life instead of consuming it?

That question changed everything.
Instead of chasing more volume, more people, and more complexity, I started stripping things down.
I stopped asking:
“How do I scale this bigger?”
And started asking:
“How do I make this work anywhere?”
That meant rebuilding my business around:
Simple, repeatable systems
A real estate model that didn’t depend on constant physical presence
Clear priorities around time, family, and flexibility
Not shortcuts.
Not hacks.
Just alignment.
I write about building a business that doesn’t require your constant presence — and the decisions that make that possible. This isn’t a blast list. It’s a journal-style newsletter. You can unsubscribe anytime. But most don’t.
Jason Shinpaugh is a real estate professional who has lived on both sides of the business.
Building the “big team” model that the industry praises, then intentionally rebuilding his business around freedom, simplicity, and sustainability.
Today, he helps agents create systems that support real life, not consume it.
What he teaches isn’t theory—it’s the result of hard-earned clarity and a business designed to work anywhere.
Nearly three decades in real estate, through multiple market cycles
Designed a business that allows full-time travel with family while staying productive
Proven ability to work remotely without sacrificing service or income
Built and led large teams and operations before choosing a simpler, scalable model

I read MREA and E-Myth for Real Estate Agents so many times, always wondering why I still felt like a failure.
Why couldn’t I keep agents? Why wasn’t I profitable? How was I supposed to create leverage or get a break without building a big team—when that’s what everyone kept telling me to do?
Almost a year ago, Jason bluntly asked me what my life goals were, and it forced me to really think. Since then, I’ve closed more transactions—almost 30 year-to-date—than ever before in my 10-year real estate career.
For the first time, I can honestly say I love what I do. I’m excited every day, and I no longer look or act like a frantic agent chasing the next deal.
Before working with Jason, I didn’t realize how addicted I was to my notifications—or how much that addiction was affecting not just me, but my friends and family. It’s been about six weeks since I eliminated them, and the difference has been a breath of fresh air.
Thank you for being bold. Thank you for speaking truth. Thank you for holding me accountable. Thank you for using your past to pour into others—and thank you for being you.
My life is better because of you and your family.
